Brand new cameras may be coming soon to Edinburg. If approved, the cameras will capture people interacting with police officers and cars even when cops aren’t around.
Officers with the Edinburg Police Department are already equipped with body cameras, but Edinburg police Chief Jaime Ayala says he’s pushing to get his team new ones.
“The body-worn cameras we currently use are rolling out of cycle,” Ayala said. “So we’re having to seek a grant to replace the existing body-worn cameras that our officers already use.”
The grant would purchase 111 new cameras, with 75% of the costs being paid by the state.
