A foul odor near the Edinburg wastewater treatment plant has been bothering residents in the area.

The stench is one neighbors say is due to stagnant sewage pipes near the plant, located at 1202 North M Road.

Resident Clarissa Delgado said she is bound to smell it at all hours of the day.

"In the mornings especially, it’s very pungent. And then at night — closer to nighttime," Delgado said. “I have to close my windows because it’s bad."

A new neighborhood is being built near the plant.

In a social media post published on Dec. 22, Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa said the city is taking both short-term and long-term measures to control that smell and increase the capacity they have at the plant.

“The reason that we've got a sewage smell in different parts of the city is because we are growing so fast,” Ochoa said in the video.

In an email, a city spokesperson told Channel 5 News that more than $27 million from the Texas Water Development Board will be used to upgrade and expand the wastewater treatment plant.

The city said construction is underway to repair an odor control system and to expand the sewage capacity at the plant.
