MISSION - Safety tops the mind of many school districts. The school year kicks off Monday.

Mission Police and Mission CISD staff are reminding the community to stay on alert on the road, especially if a school bus is nearby.

Earlier this week, law enforcement took to the street aboard a bus. The exercise served as a warning for driver’s who fail to yield when a school bus comes to a stop.

Police said failing to comply with the stop sign and flashing lights, could put kids in danger. “I think it's important that you own it in that respect that you think of your loved one on that bus. and what would you want that operator of that vehicle behind that bus to do,” said Mission Police Chief Robert Dominguez.

Director of Public Relations at Mission CISD says drivers often fail to comply with the law.  "They'll just driver around school a bus when they're picking up or dropping off students, the other it tends to confuse drivers sometimes, is when do I stop when there's two way traffic and there's a left turn lane between the two lanes of traffic, in those situations, you do stop."

 Mayra Mendoza was one of several folks stopped by police for failing to come to a stop. She said she’ll be more cautious on the road now that the school year is starting up. Mendoza, as well as other driver’s stopped by police, received a warning, no citations were issued. However, Chief Dominguez wants folks to know there are fines for not complying with the law.

•        1st offense- traffic citation between $500- $1250

•        2nd offense - traffic citation between $1000- $2000, you could lose your driver's license for up to 6 months
