Details on Attack Killing U.S. Teen in Mexico Still Developing

WESLACO – A U.S. State Department official responding to a deadly attack in Mexico that claimed the life of an American teen. Earlier Monday, they sent out condolences to the family.

Leaders in Washington, D.C. are also monitoring developments.

Conflicting reports have come out since the incident over the weekend. What all source are agreeing on is a vehicle was fired upon, killing a 13-year-old U.S. citizen and injuring several family members. The shooter is still at large.

It happened in an area on the Mexican side of the border, in a region across from Zapata and Roma.

The father of the teen killed says his son, Oscar Lopez, was shot in both legs, according to CNN. Reports say the victims were returning to the U.S. after visiting family in Monterrey. The father reportedly explained three other family members were injured, including his wife, 41-year-old Juanita Lopez, his other son and his brother-in-law, 48-year-old Raphael Castillo.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to the mayor of Cerralvo, Nuevo Leon, who says the victims are in a hospital in the city.
