EDINBURG – A contentious first day at trial for the murder of Chayse Olivarez.
State prosecutors are accusing Jose Luis Garcia, Jr. of planning the murder. Defense attorneys are saying Starr County investigators made a mistake.
Garcia was detained Aug. 11, 2017, a day after the case cracked open.
He was driving his truck down a road when a Rio Grande City police officer stopped him. That officer took the stand Tuesday.
The officer cited Garcia for driving on the shoulder to make a turn.
Another officer testified and under cross examination said the citation was not a violation, believing the officer acted outside the city’s jurisdiction.
