DEA Using Speed Detection Signs to Monitor Criminal Activity
WESLACO – Speed detection signs may seem like a simple warning of how fast one is driving but they could also be used to monitor drivers.
The Drug Enforcement Administration is using this new method to catch criminals.
The agency is beginning to place cameras in the speed detection signs to deter crimes such as drug trafficking and money laundering, according to DEA spokesperson Melvin Patterson.
"We're using this as a tool. And my question then, the question I pose back, is this something you don't want law enforcement using? You don't want them using tools to help prevent drugs coming in or out of the country?" says Patterson.
KRGV’s John Paul Barajas received mixed reactions from local residents about the new tactics.
