A normally calm and quiet neighborhood is how those living in the area of Chula Vista Drive would describe it.

The neighborhood turned into a crime scene on Tuesday night.

“Here in the colonia, it’s quiet, something like last night has never happened,” resident Zenona Pruneda said. “I was scared because God knows what was waiting for us."

On Tuesday, three officers with the San Juan Police Department were stabbed as they responded to a family violence call at a residence at the 400 block of Cancun Lane on Tuesday night.

“We are praying for them and asking God they will be OK,” Pruneda said.

According to San Juan Police Chief Leandro Sifuentes, the family violence call is one of 118 cases of domestic violence the department has seen in 2024.

Sifuentes previously said that the mother of 18-year-old Enrique Martin Ayala called police to report he was assaulting her. When police arrived, they tried to remove Ayala from the home, but he "slipped out of their grip" and grabbed a kitchen knife to stab the officers in the neck, ear and rib area.

“[The] officers did get seriously injured, they were heavily bleeding,” Sifuentes said.

Ayala was on the run for about an hour before he was arrested about a quarter mile away, hiding next to a house.

Pruneda said her grandson was one of the San Juan police officers that helped make the arrest

“I am proud of him and the others who caught the boy,” Pruneda said.

Ayala was arraigned on Wednesday and charged with three counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer, and additional charges of assault, aggravated robbery, and resisting arrest.

Sifuentes said the incident was the first time in nearly 100 years that an officer was severely injured on the job in San Juan.

At a press conference following the arraignment, Sifuentes said it’s something he hopes will never happen again.

“The officers are human beings, they bleed the same blood that you and I bleed, they are just doing their job,” Sifuentes said.

Two of the officers who were stabbed are now out of the hospital. A third remains hospitalized but in stable condition.

“I talked to them, and they said that they have no regrets, they are going to continue doing their job and serving the community,” Sifuentes said.

Ayala pleaded no contest during his arraignment. Hidalgo County jail records show he remains in custody on a bond of over $3.2 million.
