Four Alton residents will receive free restorations to their homes this weekend.

The restorations are through the city’s new home revitalizing efforts, the Casa Bonita Project.

Among those chosen to have a free makeover is Maria Llamas, who applied for the program last October through her adult daycare.

“She told me, ‘they are going to paint your house,’ and I was like, ‘I don't have money right now,’” Llamas recalled. “And she told me, ‘they are not going to charge you.’”

City officials said they first wanted to start this project three years ago – but it was delayed because of Covid.

To quality, homeowners have to 60 years old or older, have their house must have a wooden frame. 

"We are a hometown community, and we work with each other,” Samm Mercado — the city’s community service director — said. “We serve our community, and we want our community to always be in touch with us."

As of Wednesday, over 120 volunteers signed up to participate in the Saturday repairs.
