The over seven thousand homeowners in Mercedes will see an increase when they pay their property taxes next year.

City leaders recently approved the tax rate for 2024 to increase to $0.785, a one cent increase from 2023.

The average home in Mercedes is currently valued at over $119,000. When applying the new property tax rate to that home value, a homeowner would be paying $938, which is about $100 more compared to their 2023 property taxes.

With the extra money from the property tax increases, the city says they are going to be fixing up 10th Street, which is sprinkled with potholes and deterioration.

“We are doing utility upgrades while we are there, and on top of that we will reconstruct the whole street,” Mercedes City Manager Alberto Perez said.

Perez added that the project has a price tag of $2 million.

According to Perez, $80,000 in revenue from the tax increase will fund the part of the project. The rest is coming from federal funds and certificate of obligations.

“We get a lot of complaints about potholes, so when people see the results of the newly redone street, they can appreciate the one cent increase,” Perez said.
