City of McAllen responds to petition calling for campaign finance reform
A non-profit advocacy group is calling on McAllen to put an anti-corruption petition on the November 2024 ballot.
Ground Game Texas gathered more than 5 thousand signatures in support of a proposition calling for the maximum amount of campaign contributions city officials receive to be lowered to $500.
The group's attorney sent a letter to McAllen’s city attorney asking if the city will review the collected signatures.
“We have yet to get a progress check from them,” Ground Game Texas Campaign Director Karen Salazar said. “They haven't told us where they are in the process, and the deadline is getting closer and we are worried it won't get done in time.”
In a statement to Channel 5 News, the city of McAllen said they are reviewing the petition and verifying the signatures.
“There is no deadline to review the petition,” the city said in the statement. “The city of McAllen has diligently been reviewing the petition since it was received to verify the signatures."
