Weslaco officials: Chemical leak at water plant has been isolated, no public health threat
The city of Weslaco has identified a chlorine dioxide chemical line leak has occurred at the Sugarcane Water Plant, located at 2500 North Texas Boulevard, on Friday.
Officials say the affected area has been isolated outside the plant and have ensured there has been no impact on water production or drinking water quality.
The city of Pharr hazmat teams are on site to provide assistance.
Wesalco Assistant City Manager said the chemical leak is under control and there is no public health threat.
Officials say no evacuation is needed at this time, but the area is closed to the public until further notice. Residents are advised to avoid the area. Anyone working or living nearby should remain indoors until further notice.
The Weslaco Fire Department said exposure to the chemical release may cause difficulty breathing, loss of coordination, burning sensation in the eyes, nose, throat, lungs and cause nausea.
