Luis Hinojosa says his wife had been feeling under the weather, so to be safe, they both went to take a COVID-19 test.

An urgent care in Brownsville was the closest place they found - but they were shocked to see they there was a price.

"They came back to me, and they told me they were charging me $45 for the test," Hinojosa said. “I went to another place where they were doing free coronavirus testing, and it took me four more hours to do that."

Cameron County Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Rolando Casas said they’re asking people to expect a wait.

"These rapid test to take 15 minutes per person for the results, so that's where the long wait is happening,” Casas said. “We did open up two testing sites in the county. We have one in La Feria and the other one in Brownsville. The sites that we have right now with Cameron County as a partnership with a vendor that we've been working with throughout. They were able to do it free of charge due to supplemental government funding."

For anyone going to hospitals or urgent care centers to get tested, the Office of Emergency Management says they can likely expect their insurance to be billed.

The testing will take place at the following locations:

  • 2050 S. Brown Aveue, Brownsville, TX 78526 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • 26623 White Ranch Road, La Feria, TX 78559 form 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
