A Brownsville woman stole over $750,000 from the Harlingen clinic that she worked at after her husband lost his job, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Channel 5 News.

The couple was arrested earlier this month in connection with the embezzlement scheme.

As previously reported, Eduardo Nava surrendered to authorities on Aug. 18 for his alleged involvement in the case.

His wife, Yuliana Perez, was previously identified as the former HR finance director, accounts payable and payroll employee for Valley Cancer Associates in Harlingen. Police arrested her on Aug. 4 after an investigation revealed she had embezzled more than $750,000 from the clinic over a period of nearly one year starting in May 2025.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by Channel 5 News, Perez diverted the company funds to four personal bank accounts through 87 transactions.

"The fraudulent transactions were concealed by disguising them as legitimate business expenses using vendors with whom the company regularly conducted business," police said in a previous news release.

During the investigation, detectives identified a bank account belonging to Nava that investigators say was used as part of the embezzlement scheme.

“[Perez] did admit to transferring money from the business's bank accounts to her own. She stated that she began doing it since her husband lost his job,” the criminal complaint stated. 

Perez also said that at first, her husband was not aware that the money was stolen or what she was doing.

“However, sometime during the incident, he had become aware of what she was doing, and she told him that ‘everyone else is doing it,’” the complaint added.

According to the complaint, Perez also took full responsibility for the theft and did not wish her husband to be held responsible. 

Nava was charged with theft by possession and had his bond set at $45,000.

According to the complaint, over $183,000 was deposited into the bank account Nava had opened.
