Brownsville police arrest suspected members of auto theft ring
Eight people are in custody accused of stealing dozens of cars in the last few weeks, according to the Brownsville Police Department.
Brownsville police say the group specifically targeted GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado trucks to take the vehicles into Mexico.
The eight arrested were identified as:
- Polette Puentes, 28
- Edmundo Barcenas, 21
- Kevin Trinh, 19
- Jorge Alejandro Solano, 18
- Bryan Daniel Cervantes, 17
- Yahir Gomez, 17
- Eric Jay Rodriguez, 20
- Miguel Angel Cervantes,18
According to police, the group attempted to steal 45 vehicles since July 2023, but were only able to steal 25. Police recovered seven of those stolen vehicles.
Investigators said the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado trucks are in high demand across the border by cartel members.
“They're getting them, and they're being taken across the border for illegal activities,” Brownsville police investigator John Tamayo said. “So what we're asking the public to do is help us to help yourselves.”
Police are recommending GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado owners park their vehicles in well-lit areas, get an alarm system and use a steering wheel club lock to prevent them from being stolen.
The Brownsville Police Department is also seeking the public’s help in locating and identifying a man captured on camera taking a stolen Chevy Silverado into Mexico on Tuesday.
