Brownsville ISD adds 14 new officers to police force, tackling security concerns
Brownsville Independent School District is expanding its police force.
Fourteen new officers have been added to the department.
There is no downtime for the Brownsville ISD police and security department.
"Our police officers are out there on holidays, spring break, you name it we're there. We're taking care of schools during 'off time,” Brownsville ISD Chief of Police Oscar Garcia said.
Parents want it that way.
"Having BISD with strong police is very useful because like everybody, everybody wants their child to be safe, knowing that you drop off your child, and she's going to be ok at school,” Brownsville ISD parent Jennifer Delgado said.
"It's scary at times,” Brownsville ISD parent David Wade said. “You just worry. All parents do. You worry."
Inside their dispatch communication center, officers are monitoring live video cameras. Cameras are placed at all the district's 54 campuses. T
he district recently expanded its police force, 14 armed police officers were added.
The department now has 67 police officers, that’s in addition to their 71 security officers.
Brownsville ISD’s police chief wants to add more.
"Adding more personnel, police officers to the department is going to allow us to do more specialized training and services throughout the district and community,” Garcia said.
Garcia says the goal is to have armed officers stationed at all of their elementary schools.
Right now, they're only stationed at 28 of their 34 elementary campuses.
Security officers are in the school grounds of the campuses that do not have an armed officer.
