Brownsville city leaders are calling on the public to do more to conserve water.

The city's conservation call comes months ahead of summer — the hottest time of the year.

The lack of recent rainfall is adding to concerns about the Rio Grande Valley's water source.

Brownsville is kicking their awareness campaign into gear in hopes of getting everyone on the same page.

“We need to be sustainable,” Brownsville City Manager Helen Ramirez said.

The combined water levels at the Falcon and Amistad reservoirs that provide water to the Valley is at 22.2%, and they’re expected to get lower.

The city of Brownsville is currently under stage two water restrictions.

Brownsville says they are working with bigger establishments — such as museums, Gladys Porter Zoo, UTRGV, Texas Southmost College and Brownsville ISD — to conserve water wherever possible.

The city is working on educating the public. They’ll also be checking in with the Brownsville Public Utilities Board to ensure there are no water leaks in areas where water consumption is high.

Members of the public can help conserve water by:

- Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.

- Take showers instead of baths.

- Use water-efficient appliances and fixtures.
