A new program for Hidalgo ISD students aims to give them a second chance.

The school district is partnering with U.S. Border Patrol for the Rewarding Education Attitude Leadership (REAL) Mission Program.

“It's gonna allow the students to get training with the Border Patrol,” Hidalgo ISD Deputy Superintendent Albert Guerra.

The program will place middle and high school student — who are at risk of being expelled or sent to alternative school — with mentors from Border Patrol.

The six-week-long program is free, and will teach students communication skills, conflict resolution, and alcohol and drug prevention. Parents who are interested can attend a meeting in early October to sign up their child.

Hidalgo ISD is the only school district in Hidalgo County with the partnership, but Border Patrol hopes to expand the program soon.
