An employee with the city of Roma’s public works department remains in federal custody nearly a week after allegedly transporting migrants in a city vehicle while on the clock.

Raul Gonzalez III was arrested on Jan. 17 after he was spotted picking up three migrants from the Rio Grande and leading Border Patrol officers on a brief vehicle pursuit, according to a criminal complaint.

On Tuesday, a federal judge set his bond at $30,000.

According to the criminal complaint, Gonzalez told investigators he was hired to pick up the migrants for $200 per person by an unknown individual who spoke with him over the phone.

The complaint added that Gonzalez received instructions over the phone directing him to the property near the river to pick up the migrants.

“Gonzalez stated he knew what he was doing was illegal,” the complaint stated.

Escobares police Chief Pedro Estrada said Gonzalez was in his work uniform when he was arrested, indicating that he was on the clock during the alleged crime.

City of Mayor Roma Jaime Escobar Jr. told Channel 5 News that Gonzalez would be fired if he was found guilty.

"We wish to make it unequivocally clear that the city of Roma does not condone any form of illegal activity by its employees," the city of Roma said in a statement released when Gonzalez was arrested. "We have granted full cooperation to law enforcement authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this matter. Our primary concern is to ensure that justice is served, and we fully support the prosecution of any criminal activities to the fullest extent of the law."
