Block walking program in Harlingen aims to revitalize the city
A new revitalization program in Harlingen involves city commissioners participating in community block walking.
Harlingen City Commissioner Daniel Lopez created the program.
“We used to be the capital city, and there's been a belief that we've kind of slipped from that position,” Lopez said.
As part of the block walking program, city commissioners will go down every street and alleyway starting in October.
Commissioners won't be alone on their walks. Public works officials are expected to join in order to tackle streets that need fixing.
“By them walking the streets with staff, this will allow them to make sure they're reaching out to every constituent,” Harlingen Assistant City Manager Oscar Garcia said.
The city's new budget has set aside nearly $3 million to create a street paving crew.
