EDINBURG – The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 1-year-old girl.

The child was run over by her father Wednesday morning on the 3000 block of East Sherman Street in Edinburg.

According to the sheriff's office, the father was backing up his truck when he heard a noise and found his daughter.

The investigation is still ongoing.

This is the third incident in the Rio Grande Valley within the past two months.

Earlier this month, a 2-year-old child was killed after being hit by a vehicle in Harlingen when the father of the boy was reversing to exit the driveway.

In November, a 1-year-old girl was struck and killed by a vehicle operated by her grandfather as he was leaving their property.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to law enforcement earlier this month about tips to avoid a similar incident.

Authorities say if you're backing up, always take a minute to check around your vehicle for obstacles.

If children are around, have an adult outside the car and guide you out of the area safely. Also, don't rely just on your back up camera to guide you.

You can also do a “360 sweep” of the vehicle before getting into the car.
