Three candidates seek election for McAllen’s District One Commissioners seat.

As the final day to cast an early ballot approaches, all three candidates said they are ready to change McAllen for the better.

Local businessman Antonio Tony Aguirre said with millions of federal funding coming in, now is the time to elect a public servant with a background in finance.

“We have to have experience individuals who are looking at those monies [and] making sure we are tackling those thing we need immediately,” Aguirre said.

Attorney Lucia “Lucy” Thompson said the city’s tourism industry needs economic development; she wants to make McAllen a destination.

“I’d like to develop the convention center area just a little bit more,” Thompson said. “Make it more enticing, where people are intrigued.”

Tim Wilkins, a property tax consultant who ran for the district seat in 2018, said he has a six-month economic impact strategic plan ready to be executed.

“I have a very intimate knowledge and skill set of all sectors of what’s going on with— real estate, all businesses, all types,” Wilkins said. “Even the residential community. I know what’s happening with COVID, I know what type of stimulus things may be beneficial for them or not.”

Whoever wins the seat will replace Javier Villalobos, the former District 1 commissioner who is running for mayor of McAllen.
