5 on Your Side: South Padre Island residents express concern over progress of road construction
Road construction has been under way on South Padre Island for nearly a year.
Officials say the project is 43% complete, but residents say it doesn’t look as if much is actually getting done
“I was told it was a two-year project, and I don't see anybody out here working towards a two-year project," resident Richard Stamler said.
The city says they're on day 335 of a 790-day project.
“I think if you drive the whole project you look at everything, there's a lot of people out here working; and the weather has to do with it and the sourcing of materials," SPI’s assistant public works director Jon Wilson said.
Around 70%of the work is underground, and crews are installing a new water line and expanding storm sewer capacity to help with drainage
Crews are on track to complete the project by early 2024.
