Three people are in custody following a Monday shooting outside the Mercedes Early College Academy, according to Mercedes assistant police Chief Frank Sanchez.

Sanchez said the incident may be gang affiliated. No injuries were reported.

Mercedes Early College Academy was placed on lockdown and students were eventually evacuated to a nearby baseball field in response to the shooting.

The three suspects turned themselves in to authorities when they arrived at the scene, Sanchez said.

Mercedes police responded to the area of 6th Street and S. Vermont Avenue after the victim called police saying he was shot at.

Officers arriving at the scene saw a fight in progress, and the suspects ran into a nearby residence on Colorado Street, police said.

The suspects voluntarily came out of the house and two weapons, ammunition and narcotics were recovered.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, October 24 in connection with the investigation.
