RIO GRANDE VALLEY - Saturday law enforcement across the Valley are working together with the Drug Enforcement Agency to help get rid of prescription drugs. 

Many people have left over pills from doctor prescribed medication sitting in their cabinet. 

Pharmacist Bobby Muniz says doctors recommend prescriptions for everything from seasonal allergies to pain medication. 

"Somebody who has seasonal allergies, you can take a pill or a tablet and you're going to have relief. Somebody who may have severe pain will take an extreme drug like Oxycodone for severe pain," says Muniz. 

Muniz says while the prescription drugs are helpful, they can be dangerous, he says, "We want to definitely keep these out of reach of children. And one thing that people probably overlook is actually cats and dogs also. You know? Because you can definitely kill an infant, a child or your pet if it gets into their paws, hands, etc."

Harlingen Police are one of the many Valley departments joining the effort.

"Undisposed of medications can fall in the hands of children or, you know, maybe people that might abuse them," says Harlingen Police Sergeant John Parrish. 

Many Valley police departments will collect the drugs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m free of charge. 

Muniz says there are options if you can't make it out Saturday, he says, "Call your local pharmacy. Find out what, if they have a method to dispose of them properly. You definitely don't want to flush them down the toilet. You definitely don't want to put them in the garbage."
