Of the more than 1 million vaccines headed to the state next week, 900,000 of them are destined for providers already administering doses.

And with new options authorized by the FDA, state health officials are already looking to the next group of people eligible to be vaccinated.

The state has already received 24,000 of the newly authorized Johnson & Johnson one-shot doses, which are already being administered at FEMA super-sites in Arlington, Dallas, and Houston.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine was authorized as Pfizer vaccines also get new handling procedures, making the original COVID-19 vaccine another option for smaller regions.

And with educators and others in similar fields already signing up for their first dose, a wider population may be able to join them soon.

"Based on our projections for increased supply coming this month, we do expect at some point this month that we'll be able to make an announcement on 1c,” Texas Department of State Health Services Associate Commissioner Imelda Garcia said.

Garcia says the large shipment coming next week is a big leap forward as the state looks to vaccinate a wider population. The state is keeping a close eye while they determine who will be included in the "1c" category saying they're still unsure of the shipment sizes in the weeks to follow.
