SAN BENITO – An annual church fundraiser is the center of an investigation in Cameron County.

The fundraiser is a yearly event for St. Teresa Church in San Benito, but they say this is a first.

Someone was selling raffle tickets and keeping the money to themselves; the assistant administrator is blaming herself.

According to Norma Castillo, last month, a couple came in with an emotional explanation about how they wanted to help sell raffle tickets.

Castillo believed them and gave them 500 tickets. Not long after, people began calling and complaining.

It turned out the couple was not only keeping the $5 cash payments, but they were also adding zeros to their credit card reader, actually charging some victims up to $500.

Castillo believes the suspected couple has already collected more than $3,000.
