LIST: Delays in effect for Valley school districts due to cold front

Due to the Arctic blast in the forecast, school districts across the Rio Grande Valley announced they are monitoring weather conditions. 

Below is a list of the school districts that announced weather-related delays or cancellations.

This list will be updated regularly.

South Texas ISD

Due to hazardous weather conditions set to come through the RGV all after school athletic and academic activities — including tutoring — have been canceled on Monday, Jan. 15 and on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

On Tuesday, the district announced a delayed start for Wednesday, Jan. 17. 

Staff will need to report to campus and offices by 9 a.m. and classes will now start at 10 a.m.

The campus schedule is being adjusted to end the day at the usual time of 4:05 p.m.

South Texas College

Due to inclement winter weather, South Texas College will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday, Jan. 17, for students, faculty and staff.

All campuses, except for the Regional Center for Public Safety Excellence in Pharr, will open at 10 a.m. for in-person and online classes.

The Regional Center for Public Safety Excellence will open at 8 a.m.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

All in-person classes and operations will resume regular schedule Wednesday, Jan. 17.

CAMERON COUNTY 

Brownsville ISD

Classes have been canceled for Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The start of the school day across all Brownsville ISD schools will be delayed on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

High school classes will start at 10:45 a.m. on those days, middle school classes will start at 9:40 a.m. and elementary schools will start at 10 a.m.

Morning bus routes will be delayed two hours after their regularly scheduled pick up time, and parents have the option to drop off students at their regular scheduled time.

All district employees will report to work at their regular scheduled time. 

La Feria ISD

La Feria ISD will have a delayed start on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Elementary campuses will open at 9:45 a.m. All other campuses will open at 10 a.m.

Buses will begin their routes at 8 a.m.

Point Isabel ISD

The district announced a two-hour delay to all district schedules in effect for Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17.

All bus routes will be subject to the delay, and ACE morning programs will be canceled.

Santa Maria ISD

Santa Maria ISD has reported that Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17, classes will be delayed until 10 a.m. Buses will also be delayed until 9 a.m.

Santa Rosa ISD

Campuses and district facilities will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

San Benito CISD

San Benito CISD will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to inclement weather.

The school wil reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 17 on a two hour delay.

All staff will report at 9 a.m. Elementary schools will start at 9:30 a.m. and secondary schools will start at 10 a.m.

Bus schedules will be delayed two hours from their regular pickup times.

Harlingen CISD 

Harlingen CISD announces the delay of the start of school for Tuesday, January 16 and Wednesday, January 17 due to inclement weather.

Elementary schools will start at 9:45 a.m. and middle schools will start at 9:45 a.m.

High schools will start as follows:

- Harlingen H.S. and Harlingen South will start at 10:15 a.m.

- Cano Freshman Academy will start at 10:20 a.m.

- Harlingen School of Health Professions will start at 10:15 a.m.

- UTRGV Harlingen Collegiate High will start at 10 a.m.

- Secondary Alternative Center will start at 10:20 a.m.

All bus schedules will be delayed 2 hours and the school day will end at the usual time.

H.E.L.P. and ACE programs will continue to run for families needing after school services. These programs and all other after school activities will conclude no later than 6 p.m.

TSTC Harlingen campus

Texas State Technical College will close its Harlingen campus due to severe winter weather on Tuesday, Jan. 16. All day and evening classes are canceled. Online classes will continue as scheduled.

Brownsville ISD

Brownsville ISD will cancel classes on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to inclement weather

The administration will continue to monitor the weather forecast for any changes. If more changes are required, we will communicate the information immediately. Please continue to check the district’s website and social media outlets for further updates based on information we may receive from local and state agencies.

Los Fresnos CISD

Los Fresnos CISD announced they will delay classes on Tuesday, Jan. 16, by two hours.

Elementary schools will start at 9:50 a.m., middle schools will begin at 10:20 a.m. and high schools will start at 10:30 a.m.

Bus routes will also be delayed by two hours.

With the exception of campus administrators, Los Fresnos CISD PD and maintenance personnel, all campus employees will report two hours later than their regularly scheduled arrival time.

Parents can bring students during regular hours of operation if needed.

District resume normal hours on Wednesday.

HIDALGO COUNTY

Excellence in Leadership Academy

Excellence in Leadership Academy announces the cancellation of classes for Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Class will be delayed on Wednesday, Jan. 17, due to inclement weather.

Excellence in Leadership Superintendent Dr. Irma Castillo approved the following start times: ELA grades PK-8th: 9:30 a.m.

McAllen ISD

Due to potential cold weather, McAllen ISD will have a delayed start on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Elementary schools will start at 9:30 a.m., middle school classes are set to begin at 10 a.m. and high school classes will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Bus routes will run one hour later than regularly scheduled. All McAllen ISD staff will report to work at 8 a.m. 

Sharyland ISD

Sharyland ISD will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Classes will resume on wednesday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. Cafeterias will open at 8:30 a.m.

Bus routes will follow the two-hour delay. All staff will report at 8:30 a.m.  Certain staff will be notified by their direct supervisor if they will be expected to report earlier than this time. Elementary afterschool care will be open and following standard hours.

Weslaco ISD

Delayed start times were announced for Weslaco ISD campuses on Monday, Jan. 15, Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday. Jan. 17.

Elementary schools will begin at 9:30 a.m., middle schools at 9:45 a.m. and high schools are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

Additionally, bus schedule pick up will be delayed on those days. Elementary school buses will start at 8:15 a.m., middle schools at and high school buses will start their routes at 8:45 a.m.

After school athletic events and competitions for middle schools set for Monday and Tuesday have been canceled.

All after school high school athletic events for Tuesday will be canceled. All high school varsity games on Tuesday have been rescheduled for Monday evening

ACE Program will stay open on Monday and is canceled on Tuesday.

Edinburg CISD

Delayed start times have been announced for Edinburg CISD on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Elementary schools will begin at 10 a.m., middle schools will begin at 10:30 a.m. and high schools will begin at 11 a.m.

Bus schedules will also be delayed on those days. Elementary school buses will start at 9 a.m., middle school will start at 9:30 a.m. and high schools will start at 10 a.m.

All staff are to report to work at 9 a.m.

PSJA ISD

Classes have been canceled for PSJA ISD on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Classes will resume their regular schedule on Wednesday.

PSJA ISD has also announced there will be additional bus routes and breakfast will be served at all schools until 10 a.m.

Any outdoor extracurricular activities have been canceled for Monday and Tuesday.

Vanguard Academy

The school has announced all Monday after school activities and events have been canceled.

Classes on Tuesday, Jan 17, and Wednesday, Jan. 18 have also been canceled and offices will be closed.

Classes will resume on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 8 a.m.

Mission CISD

All Mission CISD school classes will be canceled and Mission CISD facilities will be closed on Tuesday, January 16.
Students and staff will not need to make up the day. For staff, the day will be counted as a Wellness Day.

Monte Alto ISD

Monte Alto ISD is canceling all classes and and closing all district facilities on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Classes will resume Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. and buses will begin their routes at 8:50 a.m.

Donna ISD

All campuses and offices at Donna ISD will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Athletic events and after school activities are also canceled for Monday, Jan. 15, and Tuesday, Jan. 16.
The district will inform parents of any changes in regard to Wednesday's schedules on their social media platforms.

La Joya ISD

La Joya ISD has announced classes have been canceled for Tuesday, Jan. 16.

All after school programs, athletic competitions and practices will be canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wednesday classes will have a delayed start. Parents can drop off students at the time they usually do, and all staff will report at their regular time.

Instructional times for elementary schools will begin at 10 a.m., middle schools at 10:45 a.m. and high schools at 11 a.m.

Bus pickup times for Wednesday will also be delayed. Elementary schools will begin at 9 a.m., middle schools at 9:45 a.m. and high schools at 10:15 a.m.

Mercedes ISD

Due to inclement weather, Mercedes ISD has canceled all classes and athletics events for Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Classes and work hours are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Elementary schools will begin at 9:30 a.m. with their bus routes starting at 8:10 a.m.

Middle schools will begin classes at 9:55 a.m. and their bus routes will start at 9:30 a.m.

High schools will start their classes at 10:10 a.m. with their bus routes starting at 9:30 a.m.

Mercedes ISD employees will report at their regular schedule time on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mercedes ACE programs/activities have been cancelled for Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Mercedes High School Varsity soccer and basketball games have been moved to Wednesday. There will be no early morning indoor practices and all outdoor practices from Monday to Wednesday are cancelled.

Students will be allowed to dress in warm clothing, such as warm ups, hooded pullovers, scarves and other wintery attire. 

Students will be dismissed at regular scheduled school hours.

Sharyland ISD

Sharyland ISD has canceled classes on Tuesday, Jan. 16. No makeup day is required for students. 

Parents are asked to check with their child’s coaches and sponsors for details regarding individual extra-curricular and athletic activities.

Staff should consult with their immediate supervisor for instructions regarding tomorrow's workday.

Class will have a two-hour delayed start on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Bus routes will also follow a two-hour delay.

Classes will begin at 10 a.m. and the cafeterias will open at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast will be available at all schools from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

Parents are asked to check with their  respective campus for early drop-off information.

Elementary afterschool care will be open and following standard hours.

Parents please check with your child’s coaches and sponsors for details regarding individual extra-curricular and athletic activities. Outdoor activities and sports will follow the district's cold weather policy.

All staff will report to work at 8:30 AM. Certain staff will be notified by their direct supervisor if they will be expected to report earlier than this time. 

Edcouch-Elsa ISD

EEISD has announced classes will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. All district teachers and staff report to work 30 mins later than normal time.

Buses will be running from 7:30 a.m. for elementary and 8:30 a.m. for secondary schools.

Students allowed to dress warmly and will not be requred to wear standard student dress code. Students can wear warm-ups, scarves and beanes but pajamas will not be allowed.

Horizon Montessori Public Schools

Due to the inclement weather, classes have been canceled for Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Classes will have a delayed start on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Breakfast will be served from 9:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. and all afterschool activities will be canceled.

Classes will resume regular school hours on Thursday, Jan. 18.

STARR COUNTY

San Isidro ISD

There will be a late start on Tuesday, January 16th. Buses will run at 8 am. Classes start at 9:30 am. If you need to drop off your students, staff will be at school at 8:00 am.

- Morning bus routes will be delayed two hours after their regularly scheduled pick up time.
- Parents have the option to drop off students at their regular scheduled time.
- BISD employees will report at their regular scheduled time. 
- After school academic programs/activities will be canceled on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
- High School Varsity games will be moved to Monday, January 15, 2024.
- Sub Varsity games will be played on Monday, January 15, 2024 if officials are available.
- Unified Sports will be moved to Monday, January 15, 2024 at Porter ECHS. 

San Isidro ISD will also have a late start on Wednesday, January 17th. Buses will run at 8 am. Classes start at 9:30 am. If you need to drop off your students, staff will be at school at 8:00 am.

Rio Grande City Grulla ISD

Monday: Regular schedule
Tuesday: Class canceled
Wednesday: All campuses will have a delayed start, beginning one hour later
- Bus pickups will also be delayed by one hour.

Roma ISD 

Roma ISD will have a two-hour delayed start for all students, staff, and teachers on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

That means all schools will start two hours later than their normal times and all buses will pick up students two hours later than their normal times.

For instance, if your child's pickup time is at 6 a.m., your child will be picked up at 8 a.m. 

WILLACY COUNTY 

San Perlita ISD

San Perlita ISD has cancelled classes for Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Classes will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Check their social media platforms for any updates.
